The NMD Could End Before It Even Begins

We first got a look at the Adidas Originals NMD back in mid-December. It featured a Boost sole, Primeknit upper and design influences from Adidas models such as the Micropacer. But fast forward two and a half months and Adidas has been throwing out NMD models like there is no tomorrow.

So far we have got four models; the original model, the NMD_R1 in grey and gold and finally the NMD Runner PK. So we have been given four sneakers in the space of two and a half months. That means that we are currently getting an NMD about every two-to-three weeks (if you ignore the fact that two of them released on the same day). This is absolutely crazy when you consider that the ‘City Pack’ has been shown on Adidas Originals Instagram so that is probably coming soon.

Apart from the fact that there is a lot of these sneakers coming out in such a short space of time, there are also some questionable NMD designs surfacing.

Most odd is the NMD Chukka that has been shown in red. It is a suede Chukka boot with minimal lacing and a typical Boost NMD sole. Now this could turn out to be a popular sneaker and I won’t try to predict the future; but it is a rather odd shoe.

So to round things up, we’ve seen a lot of NMD’s recently and are clearly going to be seeing a lot more of them in the coming months. This seems like a poor strategy from Adidas, as rushing the shoe will just cause its hype and attention to disappear. If they want the shoe to be around for years then a more scaled back approach is needed.

Take the Yeezy Boost 350 as an example. This is a shoe that was very hyped, like the NMD, but Adidas put each colourway out months apart. This ensured that people wanted them every release. But with the NMD coming out so thick and fast, people might not be able to keep paying money for more NMD sneakers every couple of weeks. But Adidas will continue to do their thing for as long as they want.

If you are an NMD fan and can’t wait for Adidas to come out with more pairs, then you’re in luck.
